At least 150 dogs are killed in Britain each week. They are given lethal injections because they are surplus to requirements. and have been in the pound for over a week. 105,000 strays are picked up every year with some 300 being abandoned every day. We claim to be a nation of animal-lovers. yet we allow this slaughter to go on.
If you can't find a dog at any of these no-kill breed rescue centres below, consider your local dog rescue centre or, if there isn't one, contact the Dogs Trust who have rescue centres across the UK packed full of all kinds and all ages of dogs. Your future friend, partner, defender could be languishing in one of their kennels now, waiting for you to find them.
Please don't buy from shady dealers, few are acceptable, it's a business and money comes first. They wear out females with far too many litters, until they are exhausted and with tumours on their mammary glands. Many are underweight and few have seen the light of day. Even so-called reputable dealers are little better, and anyway, how would you find one? The Kennel Club merely recommends dealers who have registered with them, with no guarantee they treat their dogs properly. A humane dealer does it as a sideline, the dogs are family, and the puppies are not taken away at six weeks to be sold, but stay with their mother until they are able to cope with an independent life. If you can't see the puppy with its mother, don't even entertain the thought of buying it. If you're set on a pedigree dog, the list below of rescue centres is extensive and they all have lots of dogs in need of loving homes; especially German Shepherds and Staffis, the dogs who are abused and thrown away more than any others, and often the ones considered 'dangerous' and put to sleep without a thought by so-called animal welfare organisations like the RSPCA.

As well as all these pedigree breed rescues, there are lots of non-breed specific dog [and cat] rescue centres, with people doing what is necessary to help the dogs in their care. They are all overloaded at present, and need people to adopt dogs, and also to help as volunteers; walking and socialising the dogs as well as general cleaning tasks etc. Do help in any way you can.
Woodgreen Animal Shelters is one which takes in all breeds of dogs, and other animals. And Blue Cross is one of Britain's oldest animal welfare charities. It rehomes unwanted and rescued animals and provides veterinary care for the pets of people who cannot afford private vets' fees.
